Biomarker Identification of Tear Fluid

چکیده
While some potential biomarkers for ocular diseases have been reported, it is difficult to select a single biomarker that is most important in each ocular disease. After reviewing multiple biomarker studies conducted on small sample subgroups, we concluded that newer analysis techniques may result in different and more specific findings. While progress has been made in developing various omics studies, studies comparing tears of normal and diseased eyes are still lacking. Preliminary omics studies suggest the importance of further studies aimed at identifying potential ocular-associated lipid, non-lipid/protein, and protein biomarkers. In addition, combining potential biomarkers might be a good strategy for the diagnosis and assessment of ocular diseases.

Ophthalmologist-on-a-chip: Fully Integrated Microfluidic Tear Osmolarity and Protein Biomarker Quantification for Dry Eye Stratification
Human tear film fluid offers tremendous potential as a non-invasive diagnostic fluid. However, the use of tear fluid in diagnostic medicine is limited owing to non-standardized collection methodologies and low volume availability. We present a first-reported microfluidic tear fluid biomarker assay which will serve as a foundation for both rapid biomarker validation and point-of-care ocular diag...
متن کاملDiagnosis of breast cancer by tear proteomic pattern.
BACKGROUND Early detection of breast cancer reduces breast cancer-related mortality. Breast cancer biomarkers offer a promising means of detecting this disease at the earliest and most treatable stages. PATIENTS AND METHODS The aim of this study was to generate a protein biomarker profile in tear fluid for breast cancer patients. This established biomarker profile was then used to discriminat...
متن کاملCytokine Profiles of Tear Fluid From Patients With Pediatric Lacrimal Duct Obstruction.
Purpose This study evaluated the cytokine levels in unilateral tear samples from both sides in patients with pediatric lacrimal duct obstruction. Methods Fifteen cases of unilateral lacrimal duct obstruction (mean, 26.9 ± 28.7 months old) were enrolled in this study. Tear samples were collected separately from the obstructed side and the intact side in each case before surgery, which was perf...
متن کاملTear biomarkers for keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive corneal thinning, ectatic condition, which affects vision. Recent advances in corneal topography measurements has helped advance proper diagnosis of this condition and increased research and clinical interests in the disease etiopathogenesis. Considerable progress has been achieved in understanding the progression of the disease and tear fluid has played a major rol...
متن کاملComparison of low-abundance biomarker levels in capillary-collected nonstimulated tears and washout tears of aqueous-deficient and normal patients.
PURPOSE Low tear volume limits the use of nonstimulated (NS) microcapillary tear collection in aqueous-deficient (AD) patients. Adding a small amount of "washout" fluid to the eye prior to tear collection is a potentially viable alternative method for abundant proteins, but is relatively untested for low-abundance biomarkers. This study determined the feasibility of the washout (WO) method as a...
